One-page or two-page resume? How to decide and edit
The second page contains only a skills list. You could make the font smaller, remove a project or let the document stay at two pages. Decide which information earns its space before changing the layout.
Follow an explicit page limit first. Otherwise, choose the length that lets the reader understand your relevant experience comfortably. Edit repetition before reducing type size.
Choose a length for this application
A page limit in the posting takes priority over general advice. Without one, consider how much relevant material you can explain clearly. A student with a few substantial examples can try one page. Someone whose recent work needs several distinct examples can test two. An academic CV has a different purpose and should not be compressed using a resume checklist alone.
Harvard’s guide for PhD students allows two-page resumes in contexts where the doctorate and associated experience matter. Its advice is about that audience, not a requirement to fill two pages. Use career-stage guidance as a starting point, and check the expectations of the employer and country where you are applying.
Sort the material before adjusting the margins
Take a copy of the draft and mark each entry: essential to this role, useful context, or repeated detail. Keep names, dates and context that explain your history. A job with less relevant duties may need only a short description, while a closely related project deserves more room. Avoid removing an employer just to make the chronology appear smoother.
In this fictional example, Morgan has two coordination roles, two relevant projects and a degree. The draft also contains a long generic profile, repeated meeting-administration bullets, a course list and a skills list that repeats the same tools. The editing decisions below are a worked plan; the final page count depends on the actual content and selected layout.
| Draft material | Editing decision | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Generic paragraph about being motivated and organized | Replace with a brief, factual introduction, or omit it. | Relevant responsibility and context, if the introduction adds anything. |
| Two bullets describing the same weekly meeting work | Combine the overlap. | The meeting record, owners and purpose. |
| Full list of courses | Keep only courses needed to explain a relevant skill. | The degree and necessary course context. |
| Tools repeated across several lists | Use one concise skills list; retain tools in experience where they explain the work. | Evidence of how the tools were used. |
Shorten an entry without losing its substance
Read two neighboring bullets together. If both explain how you prepared the same update, combine them around the deliverable. Keep distinct tasks separate when combining them would hide a responsibility. The aim is to remove duplicate explanation, not to compress a whole project into a sentence nobody can follow.
For Morgan, the source facts are a weekly meeting log, confirmed action owners and a status summary circulated to the project lead. There is no measurement of time saved. The revision keeps those facts while removing the repeated introduction.
Before
Responsible for preparing meeting notes each week. Also responsible for writing weekly updates about the meeting actions, checking who was responsible and sending the updates to the project lead.
After review
Prepared the weekly meeting log, confirmed action owners and circulated a status summary to the project lead.
The shorter version preserves the work and recipient. It adds no efficiency claim and does not change who made project decisions.
Adjust the page after editing the text
Start with a readable template and its normal text settings. Look for excessive gaps, an empty section, a heading stranded at the bottom or an entry split awkwardly across pages. Adjust one thing at a time, then inspect the whole document. A small change near the top can move every section below it.
In Evarlio’s Resume Studio, use the spacing and text controls available in your selected template. #002 Clarity is one possible starting point for the edit. If a template has a fixed sidebar, keep long descriptions in an area that can accommodate them. Available controls vary by template; do not assume every section can stretch across the first page.
When two pages are clearer, make both useful
Keep a second page when it carries relevant evidence that would become cramped or disappear on one page. Put enough of your fit on the first page for the reader to understand the application, and check that page two contains substantive material. Avoid padding it with unrelated courses or old duties merely to fill the space.
Export the PDF and inspect each page at a comfortable reading size. Check the first and last lines, heading placement and any continuation of an entry. Review the Chinese and English files separately; they may use different numbers of lines. A visually tidy editor view does not establish the final PDF’s page count or text order.
