How to use AI to write a resume: prompts, a worked example and a fact check

“Improve my resume” can produce a fluent draft that leaves you wondering where some of the claims came from. A smaller task is easier to review: give the tool your source notes, ask for one change and compare the result.

The practical answer

Prepare your facts and the job description. Ask AI to identify relevant evidence, edit one section and list its changes. Check each claim yourself before putting the approved text into a template.

Prepare the material before writing a prompt

MIT CAPD describes using AI to compare a resume with a job posting and improve wording, while checking for invented or exaggerated experience. Start with records you can verify: role, dates, tools, your own actions and any result you actually measured. Keep a copy of the original.

Follow any employer instructions about AI assistance. Before entering material into a tool, check what you are allowed to share and the tool’s data settings. You can replace contact details and confidential client names with placeholders for the writing exercise, then restore appropriate information in your final private draft.

Our fictional applicant Sam Rivera worked in customer support at Cedar Desk from May 2024 to October 2026. Sam is applying for customer operations work. The fictional posting asks for ticket triage, clear product issue reports and help article updates; SQL is listed as preferred. These notes are the full evidence available for the exercise.

RecordSource factWhat it does not establish
A1Reviewed support tickets and recorded issue type, reproduction steps and ticket links in a shared spreadsheet. No measured reduction in resolution time.
A2Sent a weekly summary of recurring issues to the product lead.Did not own the product roadmap.
A3Updated draft help articles after a supervisor reviewed the wording.Did not approve support policy.
A4Used spreadsheet filters; has not used SQL.SQL is a gap, even though it appears in the posting.

Prompt 1: compare the job with your evidence

Copy this instruction and replace the bracketed sections: “Compare [job description] with [numbered experience notes]. For each relevant requirement, give the supporting record IDs and explain the match. Separate direct evidence, related experience and missing evidence. Ask a question when a detail is unclear. Do not write new experience or assign a match score.”

For Sam, ticket triage and issue reporting can draw on A1 and A2. Article updates draw on A3, with the review step retained. SQL should remain missing. If the tool treats spreadsheet filters as SQL experience, correct that before asking for resume text. The table should help you choose what to write, not certify that you qualify for the role.

Prompt 2: rewrite one bullet with traceable facts

Use a narrow request: “Using A1 and A2 only, draft two concise customer operations resume bullets. Keep the tasks and recipients accurate. Add no numbers, tools, seniority or outcomes that are absent from the notes. Under each bullet, list its source IDs and any unanswered question. Put editorial notes outside the resume text.”

The following is an editorial example, not output from a measured model test. A suitable pair of bullets would be: “Recorded issue types, reproduction steps and ticket links in a shared spreadsheet for support follow-up.” And: “Prepared a weekly summary of recurring support issues for the product lead.” Both can be traced to the notes.

Fictional fact check: Sam maintained support records and sent a weekly issue summary; no time savings were measured.

Before

Led a support automation program using SQL, reducing resolution time by 40%.

After review

Prepared a weekly summary of recurring support issues for the product lead, using issue records from a shared spreadsheet.

The first draft adds leadership, automation, SQL and an unsupported result. The revision uses A1 and A2. Sam can add a measured result later only if there is a real record supporting it.

Prompt 3: audit the changes before accepting them

Ask: “Compare [proposed draft] against [original notes]. List every change in role, dates, tools, ownership, quantities and results. For each claim, give the supporting record or mark it unsupported. Do not repair missing evidence by inventing an example.” Then do your own comparison. A second AI pass can miss the same error as the first.

For a student project, check that coursework remains coursework and team work is separated from personal contribution. For a translation, check the meaning of the degree, job title and skill level. “Used Python in a course” should not become “professional Python developer” simply because the English sounds smoother.

If a sentence feels unlike you, say it aloud and explain what you mean in ordinary language. Ask for a shorter version of that explanation, or edit it yourself. Specific tasks usually give the reader more to work with than a list of impressive adjectives.

CheckQuestion to ask before keeping the sentence
Dates and titlesDo they still match the original records?
Tools and skillsHave I actually used each tool in the stated setting?
ResponsibilityDid I do or decide this, or did a teammate or manager?
ResultsWhat record supports this quantity or outcome?
Final textHave I removed source IDs, placeholders and editing notes?

Put the checked text into a usable resume

In Evarlio, start from your master career profile and review its entries. Use the target job description for the evidence check before requesting a tailored draft. The evidence check does not consume a generation credit; a completed tailoring uses one credit and includes an interview prep brief. Review the resulting material before using it.

Open the resume in My resumes to edit the content, then use Resume Studio to choose and inspect an available template. For example, try #002 Clarity with Sam’s approved support bullets and check whether the work history is easy to follow. A template changes the layout; it does not verify the text.

Export the PDF and reopen it. Check the page breaks, contact details, links and selectable text. Keep a copy of the version you actually submit with the job description. Evarlio’s resume export is PDF; if the employer specifically asks for DOCX, prepare that file separately.

Questions about AI resume writing

Can AI write a resume from scratch? It can help organize notes into a draft, but you still need to supply the experience. If you have no employment history, use relevant study, project or volunteer records and retain their context. Our first-resume guide shows how to arrange those sections.

Do I need to copy every keyword? Include a term where it accurately describes your experience. For Sam, “SQL” stays out of the skills list. You can use the missing requirement to decide what to learn or whether the role is suitable.

Will these prompts get my resume past an ATS or guarantee an interview? No. They are writing and review aids. Check the employer’s requirements and the uploaded application fields separately. If you want to prepare an introduction from the finished resume, choose one verified example and practice explaining it aloud.
